In order for any car, including the Ford Focus, to function properly, it needs regular maintenance. Replacing the air filter is one of its essential procedures. If this is not done, too little air will enter the mixture, which will lead to a drop in power and excessive fuel consumption, and dust particles will contribute to rapid engine wear.

Necessary

New air filter, keys, screwdriver

Instructions

Step 1

Turn off the Ford Focus engine. Raise the hood of the vehicle. Under the hood is a large plastic box, from which a large diameter plastic tube extends. In some cases, this tube may be crimped. It should lead to the throttle section of the engine, supplying air for subsequent mixing with fuel.

Step 2

The cover is held by special latches, which flip open, releasing the cover. This should be done without undue effort. If the latch is stuck, gently pry it open with a screwdriver. On some models, the air filter cover is not latched, but bolted. In this case, select the correct key and unscrew them. In some cases, you may need a screwdriver. After releasing the cover, move it up or to the side, while not damaging the wires, hoses and other communications that surround the cover and the box in which the air filter is located.

Step 3

Carefully remove the old filter, which can be very dirty. You do not need to shake it out, just put it aside gently, but rather pack it in an airtight bag. Clean the lower part of the air filter housing from dust and dirt accumulated in it, if this is not done, then it will heavily contaminate the new filter, and it will last much less than it should. A tire inflator that supplies compressed air works well for this.

Step 4

Install a new filter. When buying it, be sure to make sure that it is recommended by the manufacturer for installation specifically on the Ford Focus model. If there is such an opportunity, it is better to install a so-called original spare part, which probably has the required resource and cleans the air supplied to the engine to the required conditions. After installation, replace the top cover, making sure it is seated correctly and tightly.
