The starter is a DC motor. Its task is to give torque to the internal combustion engine. But DC motors have low reliability, since they have a brush mechanism. Therefore, it is sometimes required to remove the starter for service or complete replacement.

Necessary

  • - spanner key for 10;
  • - spanner key for 13;
  • - socket wrench for 13 with cardan and extension;
  • - open-end wrench for 13;
  • - flat and Phillips screwdriver.

Instructions

Step 1

Prepare your vehicle for repair. To do this, remove the negative terminal from the battery using a 10 key. The ideal option would be to remove the battery, as it will not interfere with the repair. On the classics, for example, the battery is located in the immediate vicinity of the starter, so when removing the latter, it will interfere. Remember that power wires from the battery positive are suitable for the electric starter. If they are inadvertently shorted to ground, then a fire can occur.

Step 2

Unscrew the power wire leading to the contact on the solenoid relay with a ring or open-end wrench 13. Move it aside so as not to damage the insulation on it. A still thin wire is connected to the solenoid relay. It feeds the electromagnet, which is located in the solenoid relay. When the ignition key is turned to the stop, voltage is applied to this wire, which triggers the electromagnet, and the starter gear moves along the rotor, engaging with the flywheel crown. At the end of this wire there is a plastic-insulated female terminal.

Step 3

Remove the three nuts that secure the starter to the clutch block. Please note that on modern vehicles, starters have two mounting lugs. On the classics, for example, it is unlikely that it will be possible to unscrew all the nuts with one key. The two upper ones can be easily unscrewed with ring and open-end wrenches of 13. But the lowest one needs to be unscrewed with a socket wrench for 13 with an extension cord and a cardan. The presence of a ratchet is also desirable. The nut is very close to the body, this makes it difficult to get to it with an open-end or spanner wrench.

Step 4

Install an open-end wrench into the end of the nut so that it is at right angles to the plane of the starter. And on the other side, put a screwdriver or a second key so that it is convenient to unscrew. But the disadvantage of this method is that if the nut is tightly tightened, the key will slip off. And in the worst case, the edges of the nut can collapse. On more modern models of VAZ cars, there are no problems with unscrewing the starter mounting nuts. On the VAZ-2109, it is unscrewed with a spanner wrench 13. True, if you have an injection engine, you will have to remove the air filter housing before carrying out work.

Step 5

Pull the starter housing to the side to remove it from its mounting location. Carefully so as not to damage the wires in the engine compartment, remove the starter from the top or from the bottom. Depends on what amenities are on a particular car. When the old starter is removed, a new one must be installed. Installation is carried out in reverse order. Before connecting the battery, make sure that the power wires do not short to ground anywhere.
