Crimp connections are used in pneumatic and hydraulic systems of a car, as well as when connecting power supply wires. The connection is carried out by crimping the fitting into which the end of the tube or cable is threaded. A ferrule is placed between the tube and the fitting.

Crimp connections are used in vehicle construction to assemble pipes and hoses for various hydraulic and pneumatic systems, as well as some wires for the power supply system. The crimp connection got its name due to the method of fixing a hose or tube with a connecting fitting.

Application of crimp connections

The advantages of crimp connections over other types are high reliability, ease of installation and the ability to withstand increased pressures in the system. Due to these qualities, crimp connections are widely used in modern automotive designs, being used as part of vehicle systems from various manufacturers.

In addition to pneumatic and hydraulic systems, crimping technology is also used to connect electrical cables. In this case, no high pressure resistance requirements are imposed on the connection, and the main advantages are ease of implementation and manufacturability.

Compression process

The main components of a crimp connection are the section of the hose, tube, or cable to be crimped and the nipple of the connecting fitting. The connection may also include a ferrule inserted between the above components.

In order to crimp the tube, it is necessary to put a crimp sleeve on it, then bring the end of the tube with the sleeve to the fitting of the connecting fitting and insert into it. Then, sealing and dielectric rings are put on the fitting. Next, you need to crimp the resulting connection using crimping pliers, which can be either manual or electric.

Compression of the sleeve or tube can be carried out only once, since as a result of compression, the material of the tube is deformed. In case of repeated crimping, it is necessary to cut off the deformed section of the tube and replace the crimp with a new one. The crimp connection belongs to conditionally detachable, since it allows reconnection when cutting the deformed section of the tube.

Crimp connections involve the use of a specialized tool - press pliers, also called a crimp expander. It is possible to perform a crimp connection only if the contractor has the above tool, therefore, the crimp is performed mainly by specialists from car service stations. In the case of independent work, you can rent a crimp expander or purchase it in a shop selling car locksmith tools.
