For the timely distribution of the fuel intake and exhaust gases in internal combustion engines, a gas distribution mechanism is used. Its work is carried out by opening and closing the valves driven by the camshaft. The shaft, in turn, is rigidly synchronized with the crankshaft using a chain or gear transmission. For proper engine operation, the crankshaft must be accurately adjusted.

How to install a mark on the crankshaft

It is necessary

  • - timing chain;
  • - motor oil;
  • - screwdriver;
  • - a set of wrenches;
  • - torque wrench;
  • - rags;
  • - protective gloves.

Instructions

Step 1

Assess the suitability of the chain drive. This can be done due to the absence or presence of the possibility of chain tension. If the mark on the camshaft sprocket matches the mark on the camshaft housing, and the mark on the crankshaft pulley is well below the mark on the engine cover, replace the chain.

Step 2

Test the chain before installing it. Take it flat with one hand. If the deflection does not exceed 10 mm, then the chain is suitable for use. If there is too much deflection or asymmetrical sagging of the chain branches, it is not recommended to use it.

Step 3

Proceed with installing the chain and adjusting the device. Lubricate the chain. Install the bolts that secure the sprockets. Turn the crankshaft twice and check the alignment of the crankshaft and camshaft sprocket marks. If installed correctly, the crankshaft mark will be located opposite the ebb of the cylinder block, and the risk of the camshaft sprocket will be opposite the ebb on the bearing housing. Tighten the bolts with a torque wrench.

Step 4

Tighten the chain. Wipe down the seating areas with a rag and put new gaskets under the covers.

Step 5

If the marks do not match, rotate the crankshaft so that the large keyway is set at about 10 o'clock, using the position of the numbers on the dial for convenience and clarity. The crankshaft tooth mark will be approximately 3 o'clock. This mark is a line on the end face of the crankshaft tooth, made with an electrograph.

Step 6

Look for a mark on the crankshaft that looks like a lead hole from the drill (it is located between the teeth). Lubricate the bushing under the crankshaft with engine oil and install the camshaft so that the crankshaft tooth with a mark is located in the groove of the camshaft teeth marked with a mark.
