Correct operation of the crankshaft position sensor or timing sensor is important primarily because its failure will cause the engine to stall. The sensor normally detects the moment the spark is applied to the spark plugs. The difficulty in checking the device is that it is located in an inconvenient place for connection and maintenance.

It is necessary

  • - digital voltmeter;
  • - megohmmeter Ф4108;
  • - inductance meter;
  • - mains transformer;
  • - steel plate;
  • - alcohol or gasoline;
  • - clean rags.

Instructions

Step 1

Check the location of the sensor in the seat. The gap between the synchronization disk and the core should be within 0, 6-1, 5 mm. If necessary, adjust the clearance by adding shims.

Step 2

Set the voltage on the voltmeter connected to the power supply to 13-14 V. In this case, the voltage on the contact "B" should be about 0.4 V.

Step 3

Prepare a steel plate about 20mm wide, 80-100mm long and 0.4mm thick. Bring the plate to the end of the pressure transducer by placing it in the slot in the transducer body. The voltage on the contact "B" of the tested sensor should change.

Step 4

After such a check, remove the plate from the sensor, making sure that after removing the plate, the voltage at the above sensor contact has changed to a value of 0.3-0.4 V.

Step 5

Disconnect the sensor and remove it from the socket. Inspect the instrument for possible damage to the case, terminal block, pins themselves, and core. Remove possible dirt and metal particles with alcohol or gasoline.

Step 6

Using a digital voltmeter, check the resistance of the sensor winding between the contacts of the block. It should be between 540-740 ohms. Please note that for a correct check of the active resistance, measurements must be carried out at a temperature of about 22 degrees.

Step 7

Measure the inductance of the crankshaft position sensor coil. To do this, use a meter consisting of resistance, capacitance and inductive coil. A correctly working sensor will show an inductance in the range of 200-400 mH.

Step 8

Check the insulation resistance of the specified sensor between its two terminals and the core. The F4108 megohmmeter is suitable for this. At a voltage of 500 V, the insulation resistance should not exceed 20 megohms.

Step 9

In case of careless magnetization of the sensor synchronization disk, demagnetize it using a conventional mains transformer.
