Step 1

Remove all attachment drive belts. To do this, with a transverse engine, raise the machine with a jack and remove the front wheel. Dismantle the half of the plastic apron, free access to the belts will open.

Step 2

Disconnect the central wire of the distributor or, if the engine is a separate ignition for each cylinder, disconnect the electrical connectors from the ignition coils. Unscrew the spark plugs slightly using a spark plug wrench. This will help make the job easier.

Step 3

On cars Toyota, Nissan, "Lada" and some others, the crankshaft rotates clockwise. Take this opportunity, insert a socket wrench with a pipe mounted on its wrench on the bolt head, turn the crankshaft in the direction of rotation until it stops. Make sure it is at least safe for the key to pop off the bolt head. Get behind the wheel, apply the brakes and take the car out of gear. Insert the key into the ignition switch and by short engaging the starter, loosen the crankshaft bolt. It may happen that the bolt will not be ripped off the first time. Try again. Do not try to unscrew the bolt from the "acceleration", as this can break the crankshaft.

Step 4

It is more difficult with Honda and Mitsubishi cars. On these cars, the engines are not located on the right, but on the left, and their crankshafts rotate in the other direction and it will not work to unscrew the bolt in the above way. Remove the upper timing belt cover, if possible, loosen the tension roller and remove the timing belt from the camshaft wheel. Fold the top of the timing belt into a loop and slide it over the engine mount bracket, then pull the belt midway down with a pry bar. This will firmly secure the crankshaft pulley. To complete this operation you will need the help of a partner. Someone has to hold the claw, and the other to unscrew the alternator pulley bolt.
