A broken candle is a terrible dream of a motorist. Meanwhile, this is not a reason for panic at all, but, on the contrary, for decisive action. In most cases, you can solve the problem with your own hands, without even visiting a service station.
The screwing in of the candles must be carried out with the control of the tightening torque and only if there is a grease with a high melting point - graphite or copper. This will help avoid such an unpleasant incident as a broken candle. If the trouble has already happened, there are several ways to get rid of the spark plug in the cylinder head.
With a Spline or Torx bit
The easiest and cheapest way to unscrew a broken candle on a VAZ is to sacrifice an asterisk-shaped curly bat. To remove the spark plug, you need a Torx, Spline or similar 12 mm socket. You need to put on an extension cord on the bat and drive it two or three millimeters into the neck of the clip stuck in the block with a few precise blows.
It is better to pre-treat the candle with a quick-action lubricant or pour kerosene into the groove of the lid and leave it for a day. Unscrewing a broken candle is done with a ratchet handle counterclockwise. This method is suitable for candles that have broken off due to marriage, but they are unlikely to be able to unscrew tight candles.
Unscrewing a broken candle with an extractor
The candle can be unscrewed with a special extractor. This tool is a mixture of a drill and a left-hand thread tap. It is specially designed for loosening broken bolts and studs.
The extractor is twisted by hand into the cage counterclockwise, further introduction takes place with the help of a knob. After a few turns, the skirt will separate from the clip, which will get stuck on the extractor and will not allow you to continue screwing. The skirt should be removed and the countersink re-inserted. Over time, the screwing force will become so great that the candle will give in and unscrew. Using the extractor does not generate chips that can get into the cylinder and damage it.
Drilling and screwing out
If the first two methods did not help, you will need to remove the cylinder head cover and drill a hole in the spark plug holder. A special sleeve of the corresponding diameter is screwed into it, which has either a hexagonal notch or a thread on the inside. This operation must not be carried out on the engine, since there is a high risk of swarf and metal dust entering the working area of the cylinder.
It is better to take the cylinder head cover to a turning workshop, where the hole and the installation of the "screwdriver" will be made as carefully and accurately as possible, without damaging the thread. In any case, disassembling the cylinder head can serve as an excellent reason for the current repair of the gas distribution mechanism, piston system and replacement of gaskets.
