Glow plugs are used in diesel engines to provide starting at low temperatures. The spark plug can be checked in two ways: visually and by closing the electrical circuit. Broken candles must be replaced with new ones.

The working process of a diesel automobile engine has some specific features that determine the nature of its operation at low temperatures. These features are manifested in the deterioration of the atomization of the fuel, the viscosity of which increases as a result of a decrease in temperature. To ensure starting in the cold season, modern diesel engines are equipped with glow plugs. The spark plugs preheat the air inside the cylinder, which makes it possible to start the engine at low ambient temperatures.

Ensuring trouble-free operation of a diesel engine during winter requires periodic inspection of the glow plugs. Spark plug testing is a standard procedure in a comprehensive diesel engine performance check carried out by vehicle service technicians. With certain knowledge and skills, the car owner can check the glow plugs on his own.

Testing the performance of diesel engine glow plugs can be performed in the following two ways - by checking the voltage of a closed circuit and by a visual method.

Voltage test

A voltmeter or ohmmeter is used as a control device. In the absence of instruments, testing can be performed using an LED lamp, one lead wire of which is connected to the positive pole of the battery, and the other is connected in turn to each of the candles.

Visual inspection

Before checking, the injector of one of the cylinders is turned out so that the glow plug can be seen through the hole. This method involves the participation of two people. One inspector from the driver's seat turns the ignition key while the other observes the glow plug behavior. If the spark plug is working, it should glow red hot.

This method is not applicable to all car models, since in some engines the spark plugs are not visible through the nozzle hole. In this case, you should use the first method.

If the candle is difficult to turn out, the place of its landing should be slightly soaked with kerosene or solvent. After completing the check, the plug must be installed in place, having previously lubricated its threads with grease. If inoperable candles are found during testing, they must be replaced with new ones.
