The car battery plays an important role in the functioning of the vehicle. Therefore, it should be carefully monitored and kept charged. You can recharge the battery using special chargers. In addition to those released by the industry, it is possible to use devices for this, which should be slightly modified. For example, a computer power supply. To make a battery charger from it, you will need a minimum of time and tools.
It is necessary
- - computer power supply;
- - capacitor 1000x25V;
- - ammeter 10-15 A;
- - voltmeter 15-20 V;
- - switch.
Instructions
Step 1
Take a computer power supply. Modifying it is the most common and simplest way to make a car charger. Before that, having studied the properties that it should have, acquire the necessary materials. Keep in mind that a traditional charger for car batteries should provide a voltage not exceeding 14.4V, as well as a charging current within the technical specification of the device. For example, for a 60A battery, it should have a value of 6A.
Step 2
Modify the computer power supply. Remove unnecessary elements, namely: unsolder all wires that come from the outputs of other sources (+5. V, -12 V, -5 V), do not touch common (GND) and +12 V, only yellow should remain (2 pcs.) and black (6 pcs.), remove the switch. After that, bring this device into working condition, i.e. so that the computer power supply works by passing a charge of current through it. In theory, this will be possible if the required wires are properly short-circuited. However, one cannot be mistaken here, as it is possible to "burn" the device in the event of a sharp voltage change. To avoid this, remove the overvoltage protection system from the power supply. This action will make it possible to obtain the required voltage of 14.4 V, and not 12 V, for which it is designed.
Step 3
Connect the capacitor 1000mkFx25V. Install in series with the yellow wire an ammeter with a scale of 10-15 A and a current regulator. To do this, use a simple transistor, thyristor regulator or rheostat. Install a voltmeter with a 15-20 V scale in parallel to the yellow and black wires. Install the switch in the hole previously used for the wire outlet, making it the desired shape with a file. Power is supplied through the yellow "+" and black "-" wires.
