Step 1
The hood of most Toyota models is opened using a special lever, which is located under the left side of the torpedo, if your car is left-hand drive, or under the right, if you own a right-hand drive model.
Step 2
Pull the lever towards you until you hear a click, which indicates that the hood has opened. The absence of a click when the lever is pressed usually indicates that the hood lock drive cable is torn.
Step 3
Most modern Toyota models have two cables that are responsible for opening the hood. Sometimes the hood opens, but without a click. The reason for this phenomenon can be clogged dirt or a skewed hood. Therefore, press the lever all the way and ask the assistant to try to open the hood manually.
Step 4
If the hood does not open after pressing the lever, then try pressing on the surface where the lock is located. The jammed metal tongue can open from mechanical stress and release the hood.
Step 5
Try to remove the radiator grill. To do this, study the manual for your car and find out the location of all the screws that attach the grille to the rest of the parts. If you cannot unscrew the screws, carefully break off the plastic crosshairs or cut the metal mesh.
Step 6
Feel the hood latch with your hand and wring it out. Open the hood and install the metal support.
Step 7
If you do not want to break the radiator grill, then try to open the lock through the engine compartment. To do this, raise the vehicle on a jack or lift. You can also drive the car onto an overpass.
Step 8
Use a long screwdriver or stiff wire to push the catch off the lock. If you cannot do this, then carefully unscrew all the screws that hold the lock case. After removing the lock or squeezing the tongue, ask your partner to open the hood.
