Don is the federal highway M4. It connects the central regions of the European part of Russia with the southern ones, including the North Caucasus. It is completely located on the territory of Russia, and is part of the North-South main transport corridor.
The M-4 Don highway, with a length of over one and a half thousand kilometers, connects the Krasnodar Territory, Rostov, Tula, Voronezh, Lipetsk and Moscow regions. The route of the highway: Moscow - Voronezh - Rostov-on-Don - Krasnodar - Novorossiysk.
The M4 Don road was designed and built in 1959-1966. It was designed with two lanes and was designed for light loads only. Over the next years, the road was rebuilt and changed. In November 1998, the toll section of the Don road was officially put into operation, with a length of only about 20 km. It was the first toll road section in modern Russia.
In the 2000s, the reconstruction of the M4 road continued. Multilevel intersections with other roads were made, and most of the road received separate carriageways. Also, a barrier fence was installed at the median strip, for greater safety on the highway. The main reconstruction works were carried out in 2010.
On the Moscow - Voronezh - Rostov-on-Don section, construction and reconstruction of the M4 Don federal highway was carried out. The work was carried out by order of Rosavtodor, and the construction was carried out by the contractor OJSC "Tsentrodorstroy" with the participation of more than forty different construction companies. During the construction work on this road, new technologies were used, which were supposed not only to reduce the funds spent on repair and reconstruction, but also to reduce the damage to the environment.
The toll section of the Don highway begins at the 416th kilometer of the M4 federal road. The road was built according to modern European standards. This ensures the ease and convenience of transport on it. But there are also some disadvantages. In the summertime, due to the number of vacationers who travel with their families to the south, the road is congested. As a result, queues are formed at the payment terminals. Although the two-lane road expands to eight lanes, drivers can lose 10 to 40 minutes around toll points.
The fare on the Don highway depends on the type of car. For passenger cars, one way fare is 55 rubles. For heavier cars (from 3.5 tons) and buses - 110 rubles. For heavy trucks, the cost is 220 rubles. At night, travel on this section of the road is cheaper, respectively - 50, 100 and 200 rubles. The check that the driver receives when paying must be kept until the end of the trip.
