Many motorists face the common problem of complete battery failure during the winter months. When the battery is performing poorly in the hot season, not everyone is able to notice it right away. With the onset of winter, such a battery can let you down at the most unexpected moment. If the battery in your car needs an urgent replacement, it is best not to rely on fate and replace it before the car has time to stall in the middle of the street.
First, locate the battery in your car. In most cases it will be in the same compartment as the engine, although exceptions are possible. For example, in some German cars, the battery is located under the rear seat or in the trunk.
To change the battery, you first need to remove a number of panels using the appropriate tools. Determine with what fasteners the battery is fixed in the socket. Most often, the mount is a bar that runs over the top of the battery and is secured with two threaded rods.
After removing the fasteners, check the battery terminals. They can be top or side - the top terminals are removed using a standard wrench, and the side terminals are removed using small combination socket or wrenches. Some car models use spring clips that can be removed with pliers.
After you have removed the old battery, the power supply to the car's electrical system is interrupted - so take care in advance to find in the instructions or remember the radio and alarm code. After all fasteners and wires have been removed, the battery should be removed from the pallet in which it is installed. It is best to perform all these procedures with rubber gloves - in most cases, batteries are not only heavy, but also dirty, sometimes even covered with acid.
Now you should dissolve a little soda in a liter can of water and wipe the battery holder pan, wire terminals and fixing parts. Baking soda neutralizes battery acid, so wipe down any areas that need it with a solution until the solution stops foaming. Then wipe all surfaces dry and insert a new battery into the slot. Make sure you set it correctly by looking at the "+" and "-" signs. Attach the fasteners properly, and then connect the wires to the battery in the reverse order - first the wires with the "+" sign, then the wires with the "-" sign.
