Smart keys, which are equipped with most foreign cars in the upper price segment of the automotive market, are by far the best guarantee against break-in or car theft. Unlike an immobilizer, the effect of such keys is not limited to centimeters around the ignition lock, which is an additional convenience for the car enthusiast. However, like all electrical devices, smart keys require battery replacement. How to replace the battery in the ignition key?

Necessary

  • - a new battery (battery or accumulator);
  • - flat knife.

Instructions

Step 1

Examine the smart key to find the battery cover. There are different key acquisition systems depending on the car brand. Some of them do not have a battery replacement option, so they don’t have a battery cover at all. These smart keys are designed to be very expensive to replace at the dealer. However, they can be restored without any outside help.

Step 2

Open the battery compartment cover of the key. Pull out the battery carefully so as not to damage the clamps. It can be a battery like a watch, or a small battery. Try not to drop the element, since due to its small size it is very problematic to look for it in the car, and even more so on the street asphalt. Moreover, not in all cases the battery marking is indicated inside the key, and the exact name may be needed to purchase a new element.

Step 3

If the key does not have a visible battery compartment, pay attention to the method of attaching and connecting the two planes of the device. If there are small screws, unscrew them with a suitable screwdriver. In the most difficult case, the smart key can be connected using ordinary plastic latches, which cannot be opened without some damage. As practice shows, these latches are quite difficult and break even if all precautions are taken. So open the smart key with the latches using a small flat knife, assuming in advance that you will have to glue the device during assembly. Pay attention to the fact that keys without a special cover from the battery compartment and screw mounts are exactly the devices that the manufacturer prefers to change entirely. And he asks for a substantial amount of money, usually from 3,500 to 5,000 rubles.

Step 4

Insert a new battery into the key. Most likely, after replacing the battery, the smart key lost its binding to the car and now it simply does not work. This means that you will have to "register" it again. Unfortunately, key programming is impossible without the presence of another smart that would be fully functional. To initiate the registration procedure, insert a working smart key into the ignition lock. Then turn it to position 2 for just a couple of seconds and return it to its original position. Remove the smart from the ignition and press unlock, then the lock button three times in a row. Now it's the turn of the programmable key, in which the battery has been replaced. Repeat the same procedure with the unlock and lock buttons that you just did with the working smart key. To complete the programming process, insert the restored key, turn on the ignition for a couple of seconds and immediately turn it off by removing the smart key from the lock.
