Step 1

Check the generator's performance if the warning lamp flashes. Typically, this may be due to a lack of arousal. Disconnect the positive terminal of the battery for a second, assuming the engine speed is about 1000 rpm. Simultaneously set the load in the circuit, it is enough, for example, to turn on the dipped beam. The generator voltage could otherwise rise by several volts. This, in turn, will lead to the failure of the switch. If the engine stalls, the battery will not charge. Do not be afraid to remove the terminals, as voltage regulators are comfortable with such operations. In the event of a generator malfunction, you can fix the problem on the spot without the help of an auto mechanic.

Step 2

Check the belt for integrity and tension. The deflection should be no more than one centimeter with an effort of 10 kgf. If it slips or is splashed with oil, replace it. As a last resort, wipe it down with gasoline. If the belt is okay, dry, intact and tight, check the field winding fuse. Sometimes it is enough just to move your hand. This is especially true for VAZ cars.

Step 3

Remove the generator, inspect the brushes, they may hang or be worn out. Pay attention to slip rings, in particular to their cleanliness. Put the brush block back on, check the operation of the generator. To do this, connect the excitation and rotate the pulley by hand. There should be voltage across the terminals. Connect the terminal to ground with a light bulb. If the thread smolders even a little, then everything is in order.

Step 4

Check if the rectifier diodes are working properly. To do this, you need to check them for a short circuit. Remove the rectifier unit. Connect the minus of the battery and the contact plate of the block. Touch each diode through the control light with a positive wire. Reverse the polarity of the battery. If the diode is broken, the lamp will not light, and if there is a short circuit in the diode, replace the damaged diode.

Step 5

Check the stator windings. Connect the ends of the windings through the lamp and the battery in turn. The wire is broken if the lamp is off. Then touch one end of the lamp to each wire, the other to the core. If the light comes on, then the winding closes to ground. Replace stator.
