Lovers of homemade products often choose a variety of types of vehicles as an object of technical creativity. Usually, a home-made car or tractor is assembled from serviceable units taken from machines that have served their life. It is much more difficult to assemble those units that are not included in the factory prototype kit. For example, to choose bearings for homemade products, you need to take into account the purpose of the unit and the nature of the load.

Instructions

Step 1

Determine the magnitude and direction of the load to be carried by the bearing. This is a decisive factor when choosing bearings for a DIY vehicle. For small shaft diameters and low loads, ball bearings are usually used, and for significant loads, roller bearings, which have greater rigidity.

Step 2

Estimate the nature of the load on the node. If, during the operation of the unit, the mating parts perceive a radial type load, bearings with cylindrical rollers that do not have flanges are suitable for you. Also in this case, needle roller bearings are widely used.

Step 3

If the mechanism is designed to perceive an axial load, opt for thrust bearings. Single direction ball bearings are better suited to load in one direction, and if the load is distributed alternately in two directions, it is recommended to select a suitable double ball bearing design.

Step 4

In the event that the expected load on the shaft will be combined, select a roller bearing equipped with tapered rollers. It can be replaced with a roller-type angular contact bearing, taking into account that the contact angle of the surfaces must correspond to the value of the axial load. The axial load capacity of the vehicle increases with increasing contact angle.

Step 5

If axial rather than radial loads prevail in individual units, use thrust ball bearings with four-point contact or spherical roller bearings.

Step 6

In case of technological errors, for example, in the form of a misalignment of the axis of the shaft and the housing, provide for the presence of spherical ball-type bearings in the mechanism. Their design is most capable of smoothing out errors in nodes made with insufficient accuracy. Bearings of this type are mounted in spherical holes in the housing of a particular unit.
