Correct setting makes it possible to use the power of the car to its full potential. Therefore, the main thing is to stop possible malfunctions in it in time, especially when it comes to the contact mechanism in the ignition distributor. Failure of a capacitor is a rather rare case, but on the road you need to be prepared for any unexpected events.

Step 1

Take a portable lamp, it will help check the breakdown of the capacitor to ground. Disconnect the capacitor wire and the ignition coil wire from the breaker terminal and connect the portable lamp. The capacitor is defective if the lamp comes on when the ignition is turned on. To reduce burning of the breaker contacts and increase the secondary voltage, a capacitor is connected in parallel to them. When they are opened, when the gap is minimal, a spark jumps and the capacitor is charged. Each ignition system is equipped with its own capacitor. Typically, its capacitance is in the range of 0.17-0.35 μF. For VAZ cars, it is in the range of 0, 20-0, 25 uF. The deviation in the capacitance of the capacitor gives a decrease in the secondary voltage. When it is charged and discharged, it does not exceed 5 kV.

Step 2

Disconnect the black wire from the breaker clip that goes from the ignition coil, disconnect the capacitor wires from the breaker. Touch them to each other. Switch on the ignition. If a spark appears between the ends of the wires, it will be evidence of a capacitor breakdown. You can also check its serviceability by charging it from the ignition coil with a high voltage current, and then discharging it to ground. If a discharge spark appears between the case and the capacitor wire with a characteristic click, this will mean that it is working properly. If there is no spark after charging, then the capacitor is leaking current.

Step 3

Disconnect the condenser and turn the engine crankshaft. A characteristic symptom of a capacitor malfunction is excessive sparking between the breaker contacts during engine start. Therefore, when a very weak spark appears between the mass and the central high-voltage wire, and at the same time, a sufficiently strong arcing of the breaker contacts occurs - the capacitor is broken and requires replacement.

Step 4

Take an ohmmeter. Connect the lead of the capacitor to its body to discharge it. Connect one probe of the ohmmeter to the tip of the wire, and the other to the body (switch the ohmmeter to the upper measurement limit). If the capacitor is in good working order, the arrow will deviate sharply towards "0", after which it will smoothly return to the "∞" symbol. When the polarity is reversed, the arrow deviates even more towards "zero". Replace the broken capacitor.
