Most modern cars are equipped with plastic bumpers. They have a lot of advantages over metal ones: lower weight, high corrosion resistance, modern appearance. One of the drawbacks is that it is easier to break even with a light impact. On the other hand, a plastic bumper is easier to weld on than an iron one.
Necessary
- - bright and warm room;
- - crafting table;
- - soldering iron at least 60 W;
- - hairdryer;
- - knife;
- - scissors for metal
Instructions
Step 1
Be sure to collect the plastic bumper shards immediately after the accident. You will need them if you brew it. Before repairing, remove the bumper from the vehicle and determine its structure. If the bumper is rubber-propylene, it must be sewn or glued. If it is plastic, it can be welded.
Step 2
Look at the inside of the bumper for extra confidence. You should see a formula with PP, EPDM symbols indicating that the material is weldable.
Step 3
Place the bumper on a workbench and estimate the scope of work. Select the required number of identical electrodes from metal rods, the remains of car grilles, etc. If you have no experience in repairing bumpers, select the electrodes experimentally. As you gain experience, you will learn how to determine the most convenient electrodes for each type of material.
Step 4
To select the correct electrode, cut a piece of material from the inside of the bumper and weld it back on. Be sure to experiment with several different electrodes. The quality of the weld depends on the correct choice.
Step 5
Remove dirt from the repair joint. Heat the soldering iron to operating temperature and heat both sides of the seam. To do this, start driving the sting along the seams. Join both sides of the seam while continuing to slide the tip of the soldering iron over them. When both parts grab, a groove should form at their joint.
Step 6
Cut an electrode that fits the seam in length and width, give it a triangular cross-section, sharpen its tip to the sharpness of the needle. Turn on the hair dryer to a temperature of 250-300 degrees, heat the electrode and start welding the bumper along the seam with it. Continue to heat the electrode with a hair dryer while welding. The electrode must follow exactly the groove formed. At the end of the weld, start rotating the electrode in the groove until it breaks.
Step 7
If the damage to the bumper was extensive, be sure to weld the seam on both sides. After welding, clean the welded joints with a grinder from the front side. Heat the bulge formed after the repair with a hairdryer and sag it, sharply cooling it. Install the repaired bumper on the vehicle.
