If the car muffler is damaged, the question arises before its owner: change the muffler completely or start restoring the old one. If the damage to the muffler is severe, welding will not help to repair it, and you will have to spend money on replacing this part.

Necessary

  • 1. Welding machine,
  • 2.sandpaper,
  • 3.white spirit,
  • 4. cold welding.

Instructions

Step 1

It is possible to weld a muffler only if its integrity has been violated when it hits an obstacle. You can repair it in many garage workshops, removing a small crack or burnout is inexpensive, and if you are not confident in your abilities, you do not have the necessary equipment - it is better to contact the specialists. If the hole in the muffler is corroded, welding probably won't help. In this case, the metal around the hole is usually also thinned to the limit. Sometimes sheet metal patches that are welded to the housing seams can help (these seams are thick and resist rust longer).

Step 2

It is worthwhile to independently repair a muffler using welding only if you have an inspection hole and a semiautomatic welding machine, as well as experience in welding on it.

Step 3

Remove carbon deposits and rust from the welded surface. Before starting welding work, be sure to turn off the ignition of the car, disconnect the battery - this is necessary for safety reasons. After finishing welding, remove the scale by carefully sanding it with sandpaper.

Step 4

You can use cold welding. For the average car owner, this is the most affordable method. Sand the muffler around the hole or crack with sandpaper, remove any dirt and degrease with acetone, white spirit or similar. Prepare a cold weld according to the instructions that came with it, and weld on the hole, carefully covering all the irregularities. Let the weld solidify.

Step 5

In any case, be prepared for the fact that it will not be possible to weld the muffler or the result will leave much to be desired. It is likely that a new hole will appear in the muffler - next to the welding place. It is much safer to buy a new muffler and replace the old one.
