Worn struts are not a pleasant experience. The slightest bump makes the car jump on springs alone, which impairs handling and comfort.
It is necessary
- - a set of keys;
- - jack;
- - wheel chocks;
- - safety support;
- - pullers for steering rods and springs;
- - new struts, thrust bearings, anthers, bumpers, bolts and nuts.
Instructions
Step 1
Prepare your vehicle for repairs. Be sure to install wheel chocks under both rear wheels, as you will have to remove the front wheels. Rip off the bolts securing the front wheels to the hubs. Start the repair from the side you want, there are no separate requirements for this, it is only advisable to immediately rip off the nuts that secure the rods of the struts to the support bearings. For example, start on the left side, which is closer to the driver. Raise the left side of the vehicle and remove the hub bolts completely, then remove the wheel. Now place a support under the left side and lower the car on it.
Step 2
Remove from the pin of the tie rod end the pin that fixes the position of the nut. Then you need to unscrew the nut itself using a 22 wrench. Install the steering rod puller on the pin. Be careful not to damage the boot, otherwise be sure to replace it. Tightening the puller bolt, lightly tapping on it with a hammer, you can easily remove the pull rod, which you take a little to the side so that it does not interfere with the repair.
Step 3
Remove the two bolts that secure the hub to the strut. Note that the upper bolt is needed to adjust the camber of the front wheels, an eccentric washer is welded on it under the head, there is the same washer under the nut. Since you are changing the struts completely, then after replacing you will have to make wheel alignment. The knuckles on two seemingly identical struts can be offset by a fraction of a millimeter. And this is enough for the car to move in a straight line.
Step 4
Remove the nuts that secure the thrust bearing to the glass. That's it, now you can remove the assembled rack and make its partial disassembly. As a rule, the spring and washers are not changed, since they have practically no production. Therefore, you need to compress the spring with a puller, then only unscrew the nut on the rack rod. So, from the old rack, you only need a spring and washers.
Step 5
Assemble a new stand, install a boot and a bumper, a spring, a thrust bearing, washers on it. It is advisable to do this with the stem fully extended. Now thread the nut onto the stem threads and remove the puller from the spring. Installation of the suspension strut is carried out in the reverse order to removal. After installation, tighten all threaded connections with the required force. The second side is disassembled and assembled in the same way.
