Many car owners sooner or later face the need to charge a maintenance-free battery. It is quite possible to do this, however, improper charging can lead to unpleasant consequences, up to and including damage to the battery.

Step 1

First of all, decide whether you will remove the battery or charge it directly in the car. In the first case, it will be a little easier to charge the battery, but if your car has electronics installed (alarm, radio, climate control, etc.), then the settings of these devices will be lost. In the second case, all settings will be saved, however, in the process of charging the battery, you will have to take special care so as not to damage the conductive elements.

Step 2

Prepare the maintenance-free battery before charging. The battery should be charged in a warm and dry place (if you do not plan to remove it from the car, it will be enough to put the car in the garage). If the car is parked in a cold place, leave the battery warm for a few hours to warm it up to room temperature. If the battery will be charged directly in the car, first turn off or put into sleep mode the ignition and all additional electrical appliances. Remove the parameters from the battery: the transparency of the electrolyte and its density by banks, the voltage at the terminals. Also determine if the battery needs a partial or full charge.

Step 3

Use a charger that maintains a predetermined voltage at the output and controls the current. Make sure the battery is in contact with the charger as stable as possible. Please note: the voltage at the terminals during charging should in no case exceed 15.5 V. If the discharge is too deep, it is recommended to first charge the battery at a voltage of 12 V, and then, when the current increases to 1/10 of the battery capacity, increase the voltage to 14.4 V. Charge the battery until the charging current drops to 200 mA at 14.4 V.
