Domestic car owners are interested in information about automatic transmissions. These transmissions greatly simplify the use of the machine in urban environments. But not all car owners know how to operate a car with automatic transmission. This leads to all sorts of problems and breakdowns of this unit.

Purpose of neutral mode

Why do you need a "neutral" on the machine? It is used when coasting on a manual transmission, allowing you to save a lot of fuel. But it is not possible to use the neutral mode on the machine. This is why many drivers do not see the point in having a neutral mode on the drivetrain.

Professionals believe that automatic neutral is needed in certain situations.

Firstly, when towing a car, as it reduces the load on the drive and transmission. Towing a car with automatic transmission is not performed at a speed of more than 40 km / h. Due to the impossibility to reduce the probability of breakage of the drive and "CV joints" to zero, many masters in car services even advise to abandon the automatic transmission.

Secondly, the activation of the neutral mode is desirable during a long stay. This helps prevent clutch wear and prolongs the life of the fork, basket, discs and release bearing. By activating the "Parking" mode under normal conditions, we greatly increase the load on the clutch. In turn, turning on the neutral mode and tightening the parking brake, we prevent the chaotic movement of the car, at the same time eliminating the possibility of transmission malfunctions.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Neutral Mode

But at the moment, car owners do not have a definite answer to the question of whether it is worth regularly activating the neutral mode, even with a long parking lot. Some people think that neutral should always be switched on, even at stops of 10 minutes. Others say that in this case, the load on the handbrake increases, and therefore, the gearbox can easily be disabled due to regular switching of the operating mode.

Professionals believe that it is not always necessary to activate neutral mode when the car stops. There are much more important things, such as proper maintenance of the machine, timely change of transmission fluid and oil filters. The latter makes it possible to avoid overheating of the gearbox, therefore, the likelihood of premature wear is reduced. This means that the transmission will not need to be repaired, and the car owner can be absolutely sure that his car is in perfect order.

Much more important is the correct operation of the automatic transmission, especially when it warms up after a long stay. Since all the moving units in it are lubricated with oil, which becomes thicker in the cold, the first few kilometers of the journey, all the units inside the transmission are frayed with each other, and this leads to their wear. To avoid this, it is necessary to warm up the gearbox for several minutes, starting the engine for this, depressing the brake pedal and switching the operating mode, for at least a few minutes activating all modes in turn: neutral, parking and drive.
