Brake pads are the element of the car, on which your safety on the road directly depends. Having malfunctions in the braking system, you run the risk of serious injury.
Instructions
Step 1
Before starting work, stock up on a caliper or an ordinary ruler. Raise the vehicle on a lift or jack on stands. Remove the front wheel. Check the condition of the brake pads through the hole in the caliper housing. If the thickness of the lining is less than the permissible value, replace the brake pads.
Step 2
Also measure the thickness of the brake disc. To do this, it is better to remove it by unscrewing the lower bolt that secures the caliper. After that, lift the caliper up and remove the pads from the guides. If the measured value is less than the permissible value, then the brake pads must also be replaced immediately.
Step 3
If your car has disc brakes on the rear wheels, then drum brakes must be removed from the rear wheel and brake drum. To do this, use a chisel to remove the protective cap from the hub, remove the cotter pin from the journal. After removing the thrust washer, unscrew the nut.
Step 4
Carefully remove the drum together with the inboard bearing. Take a caliper in your hands and measure the diameter of the working surface. If this value exceeds the established value, which can be found on the inside of the brake drum, then it must be replaced.
Step 5
Examine the surface of the drum carefully. If the thickness of the linings does not exceed 1 mm, if their surface is abundantly covered with oil, then the pads must be replaced. Also, replacement cannot be avoided if the drum has irregularities or pronounced ovality. At the same time, check the hub bearings, which should rotate easily and quietly, and they should also show no signs of deformation. Remember that the brake drums must be replaced in pairs, right and left at the same time.
