The car muffler is over 120 years old. For the first time it was installed on a passenger car of the French company "Panard-Levassor" in 1894 in response to the protests of the then absolute majority of city pedestrians.
Such an important pipe
From the roaring cars that appeared on city streets more than a hundred years ago, horses shied away and passers-by pressed against houses. The problem of increased noise emitted by a motor vehicle could become an obstacle to the entry of a car into the city's infrastructure. Since then, engine power has grown immeasurably, and today it would never occur to anyone to deliberately use a car without a muffler. This is possible only on closed tracks during special competitions of high-speed sports cars - the muffler takes away some of the engine's power. In addition to reducing engine exhaust noise, the muffler is also responsible for extinguishing erupting flames and cooling excessively hot exhaust fumes. Another task of this unit is to reduce the toxicity of the exhaust.
Muffler device
What is popularly called a "muffler" in one word is a curved pipe structure that consists of several parts. Immediately from the engine, from each cylinder, there are intake pipes, or "trousers", rigidly attached to it and converging into one. This is the exhaust manifold. A flame arrester is attached to the manifold in a pipe-to-pipe fashion. It is in this place that the muffler most often breaks off. The reason may be a repeated hitting of the bottom on an obstacle, as a result of which the muffler comes out of the "pants" and sags. The rest of the parts are rigidly fastened together and can be subjected to mechanical stress, getting dents or punctures, but they usually remain in place.
What to do
To return the muffler that has flown out of the "pants" into place, you need to get under the car. On the road, if you do not have a jack with you, you will have to be sophisticated, based on the conditions. After all, given that a similar incident happens just off-road, there is little hope for a passing car with a jack. You can, for example, drive over an elevation with the front wheel.
Important. If you just loosen the nuts on the clamp, insert the pipe into place with the help of an assistant and re-tighten the nuts, the muffler can soon come out of the "pants" again, even from shock. Therefore, be sure to put additional washers under the nuts, or rather larger nuts instead of washers, and tighten the clamp. Will hold securely again!
