A crack in the bumper can not only spoil your mood, but also completely deprive you of all the pleasure of driving: who likes to "flaunt" the cracked plastic? Provided that the crack is not too large and does not touch the bumper fasteners, this trouble can be helped with an ordinary soldering iron.
Necessary
- - warm water
- - detergent
- - soft cloth
- - soldering iron
- - fine-grained sandpaper
- - a few unnecessary pieces of plastic
Instructions
Step 1
Clean up the crack.
Use warm water, soap and a rag to remove all dirt and dust from the bumper surface. Wash thoroughly: the success of the repair depends largely on this. Allow the bumper to dry thoroughly after washing.
Step 2
Solder the crack. We strongly recommend that you first practice on something unnecessary, so as not to ruin your bumper due to inexperience. Using the hot tip of a soldering iron, melt the edges of the two pieces of plastic and join them together by pressing firmly against each other. Try to melt as little material as possible, otherwise the joint will be too thick, and the plastic itself will deform. Repeat this operation a couple of times to be sure of your abilities. As soon as everything starts working out, go to the actual bumper. Work from the edges of the hole to the middle, remembering to press the melted pieces of the part tightly against each other. After completing the repair, let the workpiece cool down.
Step 3
Finish the seam. Now you have to polish the surface of the bumper for a long time and painstakingly using fine-grained sandpaper. Do not spare your efforts and time: you do not do such repairs every day, and the appearance of your car deserves a few hours spent on it. If the joint is still thick and rough, first take a skin with a slightly larger grain. As the unevenness is smoothed out, change to a smoother sandpaper with a thin abrasive layer.
Step 4
This completes the bumper repair.
If necessary, it can be sanded over the entire surface, then washed, dried, degreased, covered with a layer or two primers and painted in the color you need using a spray gun or even from a spray can. The choice of materials and tools depends on your budget, patience and dexterity.
