Setting the ignition timing is important for stable engine operation. An incorrect lead angle means increased fuel consumption and rapid engine wear. For this reason, it is necessary to adjust the ignition timing in a timely manner.
Early and late ignition causes a lot of inconvenience, engine overheating, detonation, and increased gas mileage. Detonation causes premature engine wear, which can lead to costly repairs. Spending a few minutes adjusting the ignition of your car is the best way to get rid of problems. But on cars, both cam ignition (contact) and contactless are used. The first type was installed on domestic classics, and the second - on VAZ cars, starting with the eighth model. Of course, there are differences in the ignition timing adjustment.
Contact system adjustment
For example, you can consider the implementation of this procedure on the classics. The most important thing is the correct installation of the timing chain. It depends on how the valves will open and close, how synchronous the work of all cylinders will be. Pay attention to the crankshaft pulley: there is a mark on it that needs to be aligned with the mark on the engine block.
There are three marks on the block by which you can set the ignition timing. One notch is zero degrees, the second is five, and the third is ten. The angle depends on what octane number you fill the tank with. For gasoline with octane numbers 92 and 95, it is necessary to set at the mark corresponding to five degrees. To do this, you need to turn the crankshaft with a special wrench.
Now you need to remove the cover from the distributor and make sure that the slider is opposite the contact corresponding to the first cylinder.
If this is not the case, then unscrew the distributor, remove it from the splines, install the slider correctly and insert the distributor into place. After that, be sure to double-check the position. And it remains to adjust the gap of the contact group. This is done using a probe and a screwdriver.
Contactless ignition adjustment
VAZ cars of the eighth and ninth families will be a good example. The advantage of this type of ignition is that there is no contact group. This means that there is no need to adjust the clearance. The most important thing here is to install the timing belt strictly according to the marks. Only when you achieve the coincidence of the marks on the flywheel and on the camshaft, then you can start adjusting the ignition timing.
The advance angle is adjusted by turning the ignition distributor housing. The body itself can only be installed in one position. Its axis cannot be displaced in the same way as it is done on cars of the classic series. It remains only to rotate the body in a small interval. For fine adjustment, you need to use a stroboscope, as this is the best way to adjust. You can also use a light bulb, even by ear. But these are methods that are best used only in emergency cases, when it is not possible to use special devices.
