A starter is an electric motor that is responsible for starting a car by transferring mechanical energy to the flywheel of an internal combustion engine. The most common problem of domestic starters is the failure of the retractor.
Necessary
- - a wrench for 13;
- - screwdriver;
- - a hammer;
- - round-nose pliers.
Instructions
Step 1
In the engine compartment, disconnect the terminals from the battery and remove the battery. Using a wrench, unscrew the three bolts securing the starter to the engine. Remove the starter and disconnect the positive wire by unscrewing the retaining nut. Using a wrench, loosen the power wire on the solenoid and disconnect it. Apply voltage from the positive terminal of the storage battery to the output from the relay, and connect the negative terminal to the starter case.
Step 2
The relay must close two contacts. Check this by connecting an ohmmeter to the contact bolts. If the contacts do not close, then change the relay to a new one. Use a screwdriver to unscrew the three screws holding the relay and remove it. There is a rod with a spring in the solenoid relay housing, remove them. Install the new relay in reverse order.
Step 3
Remove the back cover by unscrewing the two screws. Using a screwdriver, loosen the screw that secures the brushes. Remove the brush by depressing the retaining spring. The brushes must be more than 12 mm high, otherwise replace them with new ones.
Step 4
Connect one contact of the ohmmeter to the terminals of the windings in order of priority, and the other to the case. Check for a short circuit. Remove the retaining ring from the shaft with a screwdriver. Unscrew the two starter bolts. Disconnect the starter by removing the insulating tubes. Inspect the winding for mechanical damage. If available, replace it with a new one.
Step 5
Remove the rubber ring located in the drive cover. Using round nose pliers, unpin the lever shaft. Knock out the axle and remove the drive. Remove the drive lever from the freewheel by prying it with a screwdriver. Rotate the clutch gear. If rotation occurs in both directions, the coupling must be replaced. To do this, place an anchor on a wooden block and knock down the stopper. There is a retaining ring inside, remove it with a screwdriver. After replacing the clutch, refit the retaining ring and reassemble the starter in the reverse order.
