A muffler is a part that you don't want to spend your savings on. But it's not very pleasant to ride with a collapsed one. An eerie roar and extraneous sounds will accompany you everywhere. And this affects the mood and well-being.
Replacing the muffler on any car is inevitable. This is a machine unit that is subject to all sorts of influences. Water, dirt, dust get on it, condensate accumulates inside, and even the body is heated by hot exhaust gases. In other words, what happens to the unfortunate muffler. Replacing it frequently is expensive. And the unit itself is not so complicated in its design, so it is possible to repair it.
Removal and disassembly
On all VAZ cars, removing the muffler takes no more than five minutes. For example, on front-wheel drive cars (VAZ-2108, VAZ-2109 and later models), it is attached to the body with three rubber bands. They have slots that fit over the hooks of the muffler and body. These rubber bands are removed with a flat screwdriver. If the condition is deplorable and replacement is required, then you can generally cut it off with scissors.
Also, the muffler pipe is connected to the resonator using a clamp. This is where problems can arise, so pre-treat the nuts with a penetrating lubricant. That's all that a muffler keeps on a car. It remains only to take it out from under the car to carry out disassembly. Without a welding machine, repairs will not work. If it is not there, then you will have to ask your friends. You need to use electrodes, two or three. True, the latter can burn through metal.
With the help of a grinder, you need to cut the muffler barrel in half. And inside you can see nothing but pieces of rotten and scorched metal covered with a layer of soot. All this dirt must be thrown out of the case, and the pipes, if damaged, will have to be restored. For this purpose, it will not be superfluous to have another muffler that has outlived its own.
Silencer restoration
Pay attention to how the inlet and outlet pipes are located. They have some displacement, separated by partitions, initially between which there was a layer of sound-absorbing non-combustible material. Your task is to restore the partitions, fortunately - the places of their attachment are visible on the muffler body in any condition. If the pipes are too burnt, they must be restored.
Measure out a piece of a suitable pipe (this is where the second muffler came in handy, take it from it). Decide how much of it will be in the barrel, and how much will come out. The part of the pipe that is inside the muffler must have holes. Probably, drilling them with a drill will be tedious, so you can make slots with a grinder.
Glass wool can be placed between the partitions. It does not burn and well dampens the exhaust sound. A metal brush, with which housewives wash dishes, will also show itself well. True, you will have to buy a lot of such brushes. At the very end, the assembly is carried out, the pipes are welded more tightly to the ends of the muffler. And the barrel itself can be scalded with a thin sheet of metal on top. And don't forget to make a small hole at the very bottom to allow condensation to drain out of the muffler.
