Step 1

Using a test lamp, check that the ignition coil is working properly. With the ignition on, connect one end of the lamp wire to ground and the other to the unnamed terminal. If the lamp lights up only when the terminal is touched, then this means that there has been a wire break in the primary winding. Replace the ignition coil.

Step 2

Check the insulation of the low voltage wires in the ignition distributor. Connect a test lamp to ground and the low voltage terminal on the distributor. In the event that, when the ignition is on, the lamp burns only with open contacts, the low voltage circuit is operational. If it does not light when the contacts are open, disconnect the wire from the distributor terminal and connect a test lamp between the body and the tip of the connecting wire. If the lamp lights up, then the circuit is operational only up to the ignition distributor, and the distributor itself is faulty. Typically, the cause of such a malfunction is a short circuit of the capacitor plates or a malfunction with the movable lever of the breaker and its wire with the housing. Remove the short circuit that has arisen.

Step 3

Check the proximity switch in the distributor and the switch. Disconnect the wire from the coil from terminal # 1 of the switch and connect the tip of the wire to the test lamp. Connect the other contact of the lamp to the "+ B" terminal of the coil. Switch on the ignition and check the crankshaft with the starter. If the lamp blinks, then the low voltage circuit is working, if not, replace the switch or proximity sensor.

Step 4

Check the capacitor. Disconnect the capacitor wire from the input terminal to the distributor and connect it through the lamp to the "+" terminal on the battery. If the lamp comes on, this means that the capacitor is defective and needs to be replaced.

Step 5

Remove the distributor cover, remove the central wire from the cover and bring its tip to the current-carrying plate of the runner, but not closer than 3 mm. Switch on the ignition. If a spark appears, the slider must be replaced.

Step 6

Constantly carry out a number of preventive measures to ensure the smooth operation of the ignition system. Periodically clean the distributor cap from possible contamination. Make sure the contacts are securely clamped in the lugs and terminals. If necessary, tighten the wires with nuts.
