Diesel cars are in great demand among motorists. What is the motivation behind this choice? Perhaps today, diesel cars are more economical, powerful and environmentally friendly vehicles in comparison with gasoline cars.
Very often, when purchasing a car with a diesel engine, car owners do not know the advantages and disadvantages of this unit. Before choosing, you should consider the general characteristics from the positive and negative sides, without being tied to a specific engine model.
Diesel pluses
Modern diesel engines are very reliable. They are designed to operate up to 800 thousand kilometers.
Diesel cars are quite popular in the West. And not in vain, because they have a number of advantages. First of all, they include low fuel consumption and high engine efficiency as a result of the development of maximum torque at low speeds. The torque is several times higher than in gasoline engines, and the maximum power development occurs at low revs. Also worth mentioning is the high efficiency, which is approximately 36%. For comparison, the efficiency of a gasoline engine is 26%, with the same energy consumption. Modern types of diesel engines are environmentally friendly devices, carbon monoxide emissions are minimized. The cost of diesel fuel is comparatively lower than 95 and 92 brands of gasoline.
There is also the possibility of modernizing and converting the design of a diesel engine to another type of fuel, for example, natural gas. This advantage can be excluded from the list, since the gasoline engine also supports such a reconstruction. It is impossible to assert with precision the dignity of modernizing the engine and the possibility of its re-equipment for work, since during the work, the capacity of the trunk is lost and the power reserve of such a machine is small. The low power reserve is due to the fact that methane is used as a fuel, which is not burned, but compressed. For buses with a diesel engine, this is not a very important characteristic.
The high fire safety of diesel engines, when compared with gasoline models, is possible due to the fact that the fuel does not actually evaporate, it is non-volatile.
The environmental friendliness of modern diesel cars is also ensured by the installation of parameters monitoring sensors that regulate the duration of the fuel supply.
Cons of diesel
Unfortunately, the diesel engine has its drawbacks. Its maintenance and repair are more expensive. In harsh climatic conditions, heaters or special winter fuels must be used. I am annoyed by the high noise when idling and the high sensitivity to low-quality and contaminated fuel (water, sediment, solid particles). And, of course, the main drawback is that the cost of vehicles with a diesel engine is relatively higher than the gasoline equivalent.
