The ignition coil is a device that is an element of the ignition system and is designed to convert low voltage current into high voltage current. Like all devices, the coil periodically fails and needs to be replaced.
Instructions
Step 1
Prepare a socket wrench, which is necessary for removing the ignition coil and a tester (multimeter) to check its performance. Then disconnect the negative cable from the battery. Locate the pads that are connected to the low voltage connectors of the coil leads and disconnect them. Also disconnect the tip of the high voltage wire from the ignition coil.
Step 2
On the body of the coil there are holders in which the high-voltage wires are fixed. Find them and remove them from their holders. After that, unscrew the bolts that secure the ignition coil to the cylinder block cover housing. Remove the coil carefully and disconnect the bus bar from it. Examine it carefully, pay special attention to the marking to acquire the same one.
Step 3
Then connect a multimeter to the high voltage terminals of the ignition coil. This will allow you to measure the resistance of the secondary winding. Carefully study the operation of your vehicle and compare the measured result with the permissible values, in case of serious discrepancies, replace the faulty device. Carry out the same procedure for the second ignition coil.
Step 4
Then check the primary circuit. To do this, connect a DC power supply to terminals 2 and 3, and an ohmmeter to terminals 1 and 2. The terminal markings are located on the ignition coil housing. Remember that the negative lead of the meter must be connected to the first lead.
Step 5
Keep an eye on the DC supply time, which should be no more than 10 seconds, otherwise you risk overheating the winding, which will lead to the combustion of the coil. Look at the permissible resistance indicated in the documentation, it should be in the range from 20 to 30 kOhm and compare it with the obtained data.
