Oil is a consumable material. But its consumption must fit within reasonable normalized limits. If it exceeds the norm, there is cause for concern. The first step is to determine the cause of the increased consumption.
The new engine of a modern car is able to pass the entire allotted period without adding oil, from replacement to replacement of all oil. As a rule, this is 10,000 km. True, this does not apply to every car. With the operation of the engine and its physical wear and tear, oil consumption naturally begins to grow. Oil consumption of 500 ml per 1000 km during intensive vehicle operation is the maximum permissible norm and indicates possible engine problems. This figure includes the rate of waste - up to 0.6% of gasoline consumption. With all this, it is necessary to keep in mind the operating conditions of the car: season, temperature, road conditions. Driving style also plays a role. These factors can have a significant effect on both fuel and oil consumption. Another cause of increased oil consumption may be oil leakage. The most probable places of leakage may be: - valve cover (cylinder head cover); - distributor; - fuel pump; - oil gauge; - engine crankcase; - camshaft oil seal; - rear and front oil seals; - balance shafts; - cylinder head gasket. Some of the listed places can show a leak only under pressure, and at a decent speed. If no signs of oil leakage were found, then the increased consumption is associated with burnout. Oil can burn: Due to excessive pressure in the crankcase through the crankcase ventilation system into the air filter or manifold. It is determined by the so-called "traffic light test". Drive a certain distance on a warm engine, stop for a minute, then drive off vigorously. If, at the start, a gray cloud flies out of the exhaust pipe - these are the caps. Through the rings - the engine smokes when increasing the revs. Finally, this may be the result of a crack in the block. Do not wait for irreversible consequences! For any unreasonable increase in engine oil consumption, contact the service department.
