The quality of the mufflers that are on sale leaves much to be desired. Therefore, motorists often make them on their own. Some do co-currents, but most prefer to make the exhaust sound as quiet as possible.
Some motorists prefer the loud exhaust sound. The louder the car roars, the steeper it gets. But most people prefer to make the car as quiet as possible. Reducing the noise level can be achieved by increasing the mass of all elements included in the exhaust system. This is the exhaust manifold, pipes, and a muffler. If you compare our cars with foreign cars, even the cheapest ones, you can see a significant difference in the design of the exhaust system. In foreign cars, it is much more massive. The walls of the pipes are thick, they vibrate less, therefore, there will be less outside sounds as well.
If the manifold and resonator last long enough, then the muffler quickly fails. Unfortunately, it is made of thin-walled metal that corrodes easily. And if you also take into account the fact that sellers of spare parts do not bother much with the transportation of metal, then even on a new muffler you will find many scratches that will soon begin to rust. Plus, remember about the condensation, which so loves to accumulate in the muffler. It turns out that the water spoils the muffler from the inside. But condensation can be eliminated by making a small hole at the very bottom of the muffler.
What to make a muffler from?
The most ideal material for making a muffler is stainless steel. It is good in that it does not corrode, is resistant to temperatures and liquids. Plus stainless steel is that even a thin-walled pipe has a pretty impressive weight. And this is already a reduction in vibration when the engine is running. The disadvantage of using the material is that you need to be able to work with it. Welding of stainless steel is possible, for example, in an argon atmosphere using special tungsten electrodes.
If you have experience in working with stainless steel and a welding machine, then it will not be difficult for you to make several seams. By the way, the seams will have to be done really a little. Do not forget about metal processing before starting work, the strength of the welded joint depends on it. Of course, if it is not possible to use stainless steel, you can use any other metal that can be welded. It will serve, however, not so much.
How to make a muffler?
An old muffler will be a nice addition to this process. You can simply copy all the elements from it. One pipe runs from the resonator to the muffler. Its shape is very intricate, so you will have to bend a new pipe literally by a millimeter. An inaccuracy of one centimeter can result in the muffler eventually not falling into place. So, the main element that needs special attention is made. The pipe is bent like a factory one.
Now you need to cut this pipe so that its dimensions are exactly the same as the original. Now we start making the barrel. It can be made either from sheet steel or from a piece of pipe. All pipes are carefully scalded, and mineral wool is placed inside the barrel, which is not subject to combustion and can reduce the noise level. Finally, a piece of pipe is welded to the back of the barrel. The muffler is ready, you can install it on the car. Due to the use of stainless steel, the service life of the muffler is increased.
