Replacing the power steering fluid is a question that concerns many motorists. When carrying out this operation on your own, the main thing is to clearly know which oil you need to buy, and to imagine the method of replacing it.
Most modern cars are equipped with power steering. This is due to the practicality and ease of control of the machine on which such a mechanism is installed. The very name of this car unit suggests that its proper operation directly depends on cleanliness and a sufficient oil level. However, as practice shows, not every ATF is suitable for refueling the hydraulic booster. For the normal operation of all its parts, an individual approach to each individual model is required.
The main types of oil for the power steering
There are two types of the most common power steering fluids: Pentosin and Dexron. The first one is made in Germany. It is used by most European car manufacturers. The second option is preferred by oriental manufacturers (Japan, Korea, China).
This oil is usually red in color and can often be used for both power steering and gearboxes. Pentosin fluid is usually green and is intended exclusively for use in the power steering system. There are yellow oils, but they are rare and are usually used for Mercedes cars.
The composition distinguishes between mineral and synthetic oils. It is by no means recommended to mix them. Many car enthusiasts are still debating which one is better.
Since most power steering parts are made of rubber and synthetic oils are chemically aggressive, they can interfere with the normal operation of the system. The only option in which the use of such fluids is really relevant is the use of power steering, the constituent parts of which are created specifically to perform their functions in such an environment.
Therefore, unless the instructions specifically allow the use of synthetic oil, use only mineral oil. Yellow and red liquids can be mixed with each other. Greens are not allowed with any others. The simultaneous use of two oils of different composition is also prohibited.
Replacement intervals
The power steering fluid renewal time can vary significantly. It all depends on its type and modification of the power steering. Usually, it is advisable to change the power steering oil approximately every 40-50 km. ATP must be used before it darkens and an unpleasant burning smell appears. This parameter helps you find your way if you have lost count of kilometers.
Difficulties of self-replacement
When updating oil for power steering at home, you must:
- establish the condition and amount of the liquid remaining in the system;
- determine its type;
- use a syringe to pump out the old oil and fill in the new one;
- pump the system in a stationary car (to make it easier to turn the steering wheel, it is better to put something under the wheels).
The serviceability of the hydraulic booster directly depends on the observance of the rules of its operation. Used correctly, it can last for years without the need for repairs.
