The spring of the front suspension is removed for replacement or for repairing the suspension. On rear wheel drive vehicles, the spring has to be removed when replacing the silent blocks or suspension arms. On front-wheel drive, the spring is removed when replacing the rack or repairing it.
Necessary
- - keys set;
- - jack;
- - steering tip puller;
- - ball puller;
- - pliers;
- - spring puller.
Instructions
Step 1
Prepare your vehicle for repairs. Place wheel chocks under the rear wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Rear-wheel drive cars can still be set to speed, and front-wheel drive cars can be put on the handbrake. Jack up and support the vehicle. Remove the wheel by unscrewing the bolts that secure it to the hub.
Step 2
See what type of suspension is on your car. This will determine what actions will have to be carried out to carry out the repair. For example, on the classic, a double wishbone suspension is installed, which consists of an upper and lower levers, fixed to the body with silent blocks. Front-wheel-drive vehicles have a MacPherson strut-type suspension, in which there are no levers, and the shock absorber itself performs several functions at the same time.
Step 3
Remove the cotter pin from the steering end and remove the nut if you have a front wheel drive vehicle with MacPherson strut suspension. In advance, with a socket wrench, rip off the nut that secures the shock absorber rod to the support bearing. Next, using a tie rod puller, remove the tip from the steering knuckle. The strut is attached to the hub with two bolts, one of which has eccentric washers for camber adjustment. Before removing the bolts, mark the position of the hub relative to the rack. In case you will be installing the same rack. If you are going to put another one, you will have to do wheel alignment.
Step 4
Compress the spring with a puller if you have a rear wheel drive vehicle with a wishbone suspension. This will avoid the complete expansion of the spring and will also facilitate further installation. Now remove the shock absorber and proceed with the removal of the ball joints. The ball balls do not need to be removed completely, it is enough to unscrew three bolts with which each support is attached to the lever. Pull the wheel hub aside. Unscrew the bar that secures the anti-roll bar to the lower arm. Now, by lowering the lower arm, you can remove the spring.
Step 5
Remove the three nuts that secure the thrust bearing to the body if you have a front wheel drive vehicle with MacPherson strut. When you unscrew these three nuts, the entire rack will slide down freely. Due to the fact that the nut that fixed the stem was torn off in advance, now it will be much easier to unscrew it. But first compress the spring with a puller. Do this carefully, pulling the two sides of the spring evenly. When the spring is compressed, you need to unscrew the nut from the stem, remove the support bearing, after which the spring will only come out.
