Among car enthusiasts, driving through an unregulated intersection is considered the most difficult maneuver. And not in vain, because compliance with the rules for driving at an unregulated intersection requires the driver to be especially attentive and focused on the maneuver.
Knowledge of the rules will help to avoid critical situations on the road and conflicts with other road users.
Assessment of the situation
Before crossing an intersection, it is necessary to give a correct assessment of its type, rebuild in advance in the required lane and clearly determine the order of passage.
It should always be remembered that the priority right of passage on all roads and intersections is used by special services vehicles equipped with flashing beacons and special sound signals. The rest of the transport when they approach is obliged to give way to him.
After special transport, trams have the right of preferential passage, therefore, all other types of transport, if there are tram tracks at the intersection, are obliged to give way to trams. The trams themselves pass among themselves according to the rules for crossing equivalent unregulated intersections.
When making a right turn, having rearranged in the required lane in advance, it is necessary to turn on the right turn and be the first to maneuver, without yielding to other vehicles. But remember about the above two points (the preferential right of passage for special vehicles with a flashing beacon, special signal and trams turned on)
Compliance with rows
After completing the maneuver (turning to the right), the vehicle must continue to move in the rightmost lane. Four exceptional cases of turning not from the extreme right lane are provided for by the traffic rules:
- large dimensions of the vehicle, which do not allow making a maneuver from the extreme right lane;
- the presence of a sign "Direction of movement along lanes" (clause 5.15.1), which allows turning from those lanes that are indicated by the sign;
- the presence of a sign "Roundabout" (clause 4.3), which allows turning to the right from any lane;
- the presence of the sign "Lane for route vehicles" (clause 5.14), indicated by a solid line of marking, implies turning only from the second lane.
Right hand hindrance rule
Further, when crossing an equivalent intersection, you should use the rule "interference from the right". This rule provides for the order of priority passage of vehicles that do not have obstacles to the right when maneuvering. In other cases, including the order of passage of special vehicles and trams, the driver of the vehicle making the maneuver is obliged to give way.
An exception
Sometimes there are moments in life that are not subject to any rules. This is the case with the order of passage of an unregulated equivalent intersection. A situation may occur when four cars have arrived at an intersection and are going to cross it, without changing the direction of movement. It is impossible to determine the order of passage using the rule "interference from the right". None of the vehicles has a priority, and no one can start moving first.
Traffic rules do not provide for the possibility of such a situation and do not provide explanations on this matter. This means that we will have to resolve this misunderstanding on our own. As a rule, a more experienced motorist will more quickly assess the situation and suggest to his colleague on the left to start driving first. And only then, in the absence of an obstacle on the right, oncoming traffic will be able to start moving, then a car, which creates an obstacle to the right of the initiator of the adjustment. Accordingly, the last to cross the intersection is the most experienced and polite motorist.
But this situation is extremely rare. Usually such intersections, especially those with heavy traffic, are equipped with priority signs or traffic lights.
