Athermal glass appeared on the automotive market not so long ago - therefore, there is still confusion in the definition of this product. Many people consider glass athermal if it is tinted or covered with a film. However, this is not at all the case.
The main feature of athermal glasses is the reflection and partial absorption of sunlight. Due to the selective ability of this product (in terms of spectral radiation), a comfortable temperature is established in the cabin; however, in some cases, neither air conditioning nor climate control is needed.
Production and benefits of athermal glass
Glass becomes athermal during its manufacture; a specific treatment is carried out, consisting in the application of a special coating, which includes silver ions (a certain percentage). As a result, the product takes on a purple or greenish tint. Athermal glass is about one and a half times more expensive than ordinary triplex, however, this is offset by quite tangible advantages, since innovative windshield:
- significantly reduces the number of glare;
- reduces the load on the air conditioner;
- protects interior elements from burnout;
- gently scatters the sun's rays, as a result of which possible distortions are reduced to zero (the "picture" is more contrasting), which increases driving safety;
- retains heat in the cold season;
- almost does not freeze in winter and fogs up a little;
- more durable, stronger than standard triplex.
How to choose athermal glass
The gradually developing popularity of the new product has given rise to many fakes, which are produced by companies that do not have the necessary equipment. When choosing glass, first inspect its edges - they must be processed, moreover, carefully. Film sticking out or uneven edges indicate poor quality. Next, pay attention to the marking - on a truly athermal glass there should be one of two designations:
- INTED: product with a faint greenish tint (light transmission 81%);
- OVERINTED: product with a more intense green tint and enhanced heat absorption (light transmission 78.5%).
The production of athermal glasses requires sophisticated, expensive equipment. Therefore, only large-scale industries can produce such products. For example, in Russia, only three companies produce such glasses for VAZ cars: Borsky plant, FuyaoGlass corporation and KMK Glass LLC. Therefore, before buying, look at the manufacturer's markings. If the glass is of foreign (European) production, then the name of the manufacturer, the toning code (which is important for athermal glasses) will be on top, the country code in the circle, and the date of manufacture at the very bottom.
