Engine oil has several important functions: it protects friction surfaces from wear and damage, removes heat from them, cleans engine systems, and reduces shock loads. In other words, it ensures long and trouble-free engine operation. In order to prevent oil starvation in the engine, it is recommended to check the oil level regularly. The frequency of the check depends on the characteristics and condition of the vehicle.
Necessary
- - napkin;
- - rags.
Instructions
Step 1
Make sure the vehicle is on a level surface. Skewing the engine to either side will lead to incorrect measurements. Make sure the engine is off. The oil level is checked with the engine off before starting, i.e. on a cold unit. It is allowed to take measurements 5-7 minutes after stopping the engine so that the oil has time to drain into the engine crankcase. But hot oil expands significantly, so measurements on a cold engine are still preferable.
Step 2
Open the hood and locate the slot near the engine where the dipstick is inserted. Take it out gently, wipe it with a napkin or rag. Wipe the dipstick dry. The rags should be clean, dry, and should not leave lint behind.
Step 3
Reinsert the dipstick. Do not measure the level when first removing the dipstick. The oil, flowing down, leaves traces on it, which is why the dipstick shows an overabundance of oil. In fact, repeated immersion and removal of the previously wiped dry probe gives a completely different result.
Step 4
Remove the dipstick and, by the trace of oil on it, determine the oil level in the crankcase of the car engine. To do this, focus on the special notches. The oil level must be below the maximum (upper) and above the minimum (lower) mark. If the level is close to or below the minimum mark, add oil.
