Engine oil is used to reduce wear on engine parts and reduce friction. It also creates pressure in the components to be lubricated and removes heat from pistons and plain bearings. For the full operation of components and mechanisms, it is required to maintain a certain level of oil pressure in the system. How should this level be measured?
Necessary
a device for measuring oil pressure
Instructions
Step 1
To identify a violation of the optimal pressure in the system, measure it. The question may arise: why do you need to measure pressure if the design of the car provides for a special sensor for this? However, the sensor is triggered only when the pressure drops to a critical (emergency) level, when it is too late to take preventive measures. In addition, the sensors do not always accurately reflect the true state of the oil pressure.
Step 2
Use a special device to measure oil pressure, for example, IDM-1. Most instruments are gasoline and oil resistant and have a convenient measuring range. Connect the pressure gauge through the threaded hole into which the pressure sensor is inserted. In a universal design, professional meters are supplied with adapters and a set of adapters.
Step 3
Before taking measurements directly, check the pressure data given in the technical description of the engine. The measurement must be carried out at idle speed. Please note that the measurement result will be influenced by the temperature of the medium, which determines the fluidity of the oil.
Step 4
It is recommended to measure at the operating temperature of the unit. Warm up the engine to normal operating condition (crankcase oil temperature should exceed 60 degrees).
Step 5
Remove the oil pressure switch from the engine off. Attach the selected adapter to the indicator hose and oil system.
Step 6
Start the engine and read the indicators from the device by changing the crankshaft revolutions.
Step 7
Stop the engine and wait until the system pressure drops to zero. Relieve pressure with indicator reset button, disconnect indicator from engine and attach oil pressure switch.
Step 8
To assess the condition of the system, compare the measured results with the reference values that can be taken from the technical documentation for this engine. The documentation also usually indicates at what speed the pressure should be measured. Based on the results of the assessment, draw a conclusion about the performance of the engine.
