The overhaul of the engine is not at all terrible. If you have the necessary tool and desire, then everything is doable. True, you will also have to change some nodes if you want to add power.
Before starting a major overhaul, you need to answer to yourself the question, what exactly are you trying to achieve? If your goals include achieving the parameters that are inherent in a new car, then you should use standard spare parts. But if you are pursuing the goal of increasing the speed and power of the engine, then you will need to use special lightweight units.
Where to start and how to finish a major overhaul? What nuances should be considered when conducting? If you have one car, then the most acceptable option would be to purchase a similar engine, which you will repair. Fortunately, legislation allows replacing the entire engine, and registration is not required.
Engine overhaul
Of course, first of all, you will need to bore the cylinders to the next oversize. Tuning lovers will start to object here, since to increase the power, the cylinders need to be bored to the maximum repair. Only next time you will have to change the sleeves in the block. After boring, honing is required, which can be either mirror or mesh. There is a lot of controversy about which is better, but choosing a mirror is better, since the mesh wears out rather quickly, and the power will ultimately decrease.
Lightweight connecting rods and pistons are the way to increase rpm and power. Judge for yourself, because the entire crank mechanism becomes lighter, it is easier for burning fuel to rotate the crankshaft and push the pistons. Consequently, more energy is left for the wheels of the car. But do not forget about the lubrication system, as the standard one may not cope with the increased power. Troubleshoot the oil pump, reducing all gaps between its housing and the engine block.
The flywheel also needs to be changed during tuning. It must be sharpened to the maximum. It is best not to do this yourself, since balancing is required after grinding. If you do not do it, then when the engine is running, there will be extraneous knocks and vibrations. The cooling system also requires changes, it is desirable to increase the area of the cooling radiator. If possible, you can even use a pump with a large number of blades for better fluid circulation.
Break-in after repair
Be careful with the engine on which the components have been lightened as much as possible. Drive off carefully, as with a light flywheel, the car will start abruptly. Try not to increase the revs, the maximum speed should be no more than 90-100 km / h. The better you run in, the longer you will not be aware of engine problems.
It is not necessary to run-in on new cars, because assembly and adjustment is carried out using the latest high-precision robots. But after a major overhaul, it takes some time to drive in a sparing mode. Only after ten thousand kilometers you will feel that the engine has "come to life" and added more horses. Don't be discouraged if you don't feel it when you leave the garage.
