When driving on the road, the vehicle must keep a clear course. For this, its steering is intended. If this condition is not met, then in this case it becomes extremely difficult to keep the car on the track, which can lead to an accident. You should regularly check not only wheel alignment, but also the condition of the suspension, since your and other people's lives on the road depend on it.
It is necessary
- - ruler;
- - a special device made of telescopic pipes
Instructions
Step 1
Place the vehicle on a level, horizontal platform above the inspection pit or on a lift. Adjusting camber on your own is a doable task. Check the steering wheel. Make sure that it stands straight when moving in a straight line, in addition, the number of revolutions to the left and to the right must match. After installing the car, check the tire pressure, bring it to the required value, the reliability of the steering mechanism and suspension. Tighten the loosened nuts and bolts.
Step 2
Calculate the difference in distance between points on the rim of the wheel in front and behind its geometric axis to determine the amount of toe-in. Use a ruler or a special chain with a tensioner for this operation. Assemble the instrument from telescopic pipes, install the scale and control chains on it.
Step 3
Measure the toe-in. To do this, install a ruler in front of the wheels so that the tips of the telescopic tube rest against the sidewalls of the tires, while the chains should touch the ground. Set the arrow on the scale to the zero position, roll the car forward so that the ruler is behind the geometric axis of the wheels. Determine the amount of convergence by the arrow. In case of deviation from the standards, correct it. To do this, rotate the steering rod couplings. Tighten the locknuts securely after adjusting.
Step 4
Check and adjust the camber. This operation is considered more complex, however, it is carried out independently. Raise the vehicle to keep the tires off the ground. Then calculate the points of equal runout on their sidewalls. Place a firm hand rest for this and grab the chalk. Bring it to the spinning wheel and mark the protruding diametrically opposed elements, resting on the stand. Then turn the wheel, the marks should be vertical.
Step 5
Hang a weight next to the wheel or enclose a rectangle. The difference between the distances between its plane or load thread and the upper part of the rim is the amount of camber. It should correspond to an interval of 1 to 5 mm. Otherwise, it should be adjusted. To do this, add shims between the cross member and the arm shaft. Check your adjustments by driving a few kilometers on the road. Performing a collapse on your own, you can save a decent amount of money, but it is better to do this at special stands in the service.
