A battery is a device designed to provide power to the vehicle's systems when the engine is stopped. Also, his responsibilities include starting the engine using an electric starter.

The rechargeable battery is the power source in any modern car. It serves to start the engine with an electric starter and to supply energy consumers when the engine is stopped. Most modern batteries are lead acid. But on electric vehicles, for example, as well as hybrids, lithium-ion batteries are widely used. In the past, alkaline batteries also worked well on electric forklift trucks. But they are expensive to manufacture, despite their durability. Lead with sulfuric acid solution is much cheaper.

Lead-acid battery designs

The housing made of hard plastic, filled with an electrolyte (sulfuric acid solution), is completely sealed, since in the case of acid splashing, the metal and paintwork are almost instantly destroyed. The battery case is divided into six equal compartments, each of which is a separate battery. All compartments are connected in series (anode to cathode). In other words, each compartment outputs a voltage of about two volts.

The connection of the electrodes is made using thick lead plates. There are battery models in which these plates are brought out to the surface of the case. But for the most part they are hidden inside the case and filled with plastic. Batteries are divided into serviceable and non-serviceable. The former allow you to top up distilled water as needed, they can be charged using a special charger. They have drain plugs on each compartment that you can unscrew and check the electrolyte level.

As for maintenance-free batteries, they can only be charged with direct current. And it will not work to add water to the jars, since there are no necks. What is the purpose of charging and refilling water? Charging is necessary when the battery voltage has dropped to a minimum, for example, when it is idle for a long time. And adding water is required to normalize the second important parameter - the electrical capacity of the battery.

How to start a car with a dead battery?

If the gearbox is mechanical, you can start the car in the "old-fashioned" way - from a tug or a pusher. You hook your car to another car, the engine of which is running, and then accelerate, turn on the ignition and third speed. It is better to turn on the third one, since it will be easier for the towing vehicle to pull your car, you will not notice a sharp jerk when releasing the clutch. Similarly, start from the pusher, only 1-2 people will give the car traction.

But the "lighting" method is suitable for cars with both automatic transmission and mechanics. To do this, you need only two power wires, which must be pulled from the battery of the running car to the battery of the "donor". Don't just confuse plus and minus. The donor car should work at high revs, 1500-2000 is enough. After all, you need to power the systems of two machines at once. After the car with a dead battery has started, do not throw off the wires, let the engines run in pairs for some time.
