Incorrect or inaccurate camber and toe adjustment is a common cause of poor stability and controllability. On VAZ 2101-2107 cars, the angle of the caster, the camber and toe angles are subject to adjustment. But most modern cars do not need camber and toe adjustment due to the suspension design.

Instructions

Step 1

To stabilize the steered wheels in the direction of rectilinear movement, the caster (pivot axis) caster angle adjustment is used. To increase the angle, it is necessary to add spacers from the side of the rear attachment of the axle of the lower arm or remove them from under the front attachment. Reverse displacement will result in a decrease in the caster angle of the king pin. Signs that the angle has deviated from the norm are: different forces on the steering wheel when turning right and left, tire tread wear on only one side, car drift when driving to the side.

Step 2

The correct position of the rolling wheel during suspension operation depends on the camber angle. This angle is adjusted by changing the number of spacers between the beam and the axis of the lower arm. To increase the camber angle, it is necessary to remove the same number of spacers from the rear and front mountings of the lower arm axle; if they are added, the angle will decrease. A significant difference from the norm of the camber angle can cause one-sided wear of the tread and drive the car away from straight-line movement.

Step 3

Toe-in affects the correct position of the steer wheels at different steering angles and vehicle speeds. Toe adjustment is carried out by changing, by rotating the adjusting couplings, the length of the side steering rods, while the clamping clamps must be loosened. When tightening the clamps, it is necessary to ensure that the slot of the coupling and the slots of the clamps are opposite each other, or not more than 30 ° apart.

Step 4

Before you start adjusting the toe angle, you need to set the steering bipod to the middle position, i.e. The steering wheel spoke must be horizontal. Signs of a deviation from the norm of the angle of convergence of the wheels are: squealing of tires when turning, even with minor deviations, there is a strong sawtooth tire wear, due to the high rolling resistance of the front wheels, increased fuel consumption is observed.

Step 5

It is better to control and adjust the front wheel alignment angles at service stations. In accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations, the vehicle is installed on a horizontal platform. Before proceeding with the adjustment of the camber and toe angle of the front wheels, it is necessary to make sure that the pressure in the tires is correct, the tread wear is the same on the left and right wheels, the rims are not subject to deformation, and there is no play in the bearings and steering wheel.

Step 6

Before starting to control the camber and toe angles, the car must be rocked 2-3 times with a force of 492-590 N (50-60 kg) directed from top to bottom. If there was a replacement or repair of car suspension parts that affect the camber-toe angles, then checking these angles is mandatory. First of all, there is a check and adjustment of the caster angle of the steering axis, then the camber angle, and ends with a check of the wheel alignment.
