Step 1
First of all, turn off the power to your car, for which turn off the ignition. After you open the hood, unscrew the bolts on the battery cover and gently remove it. Your task is made easier if the battery cover is not provided. If the battery is old, it is possible that the cover has stuck to the battery - in this case, you need to clean the joints, remove the white coating and, using a screwdriver as a lever, slowly lift the cover. In case of breakage, the cover will have to be replaced.

Then you can safely disconnect the power cables from the battery. In this case, you must follow a certain sequence: first, disconnect the ground (wire with the "-" sign), and then the "+" cable. There is very little left - unscrew the nut, get the clamping strap, unscrew the fastening bolt and remove the retaining plate. That's it, you can remove the battery.

Some cars are equipped with memory devices that record engine malfunctions, anti-lock systems, electronic clocks and radio equipment, which, when the battery is disconnected, reset the information recorded in them. To prevent this from happening, set the fault memory mode on these devices, and set the radio code on the anti-theft systems before disconnecting the battery.
Step 4
Many modern car models have maintenance-free and low maintenance batteries. They cannot be repaired, but only need maintenance (inspection and cleaning of clamps and terminals). To refill them with distilled water, for example, you just need to unscrew the plugs with a special screwdriver. Such batteries can be charged without removing them from the car. Never disconnect the battery while the engine is running, otherwise the car's electrical equipment may be damaged. Many car owners prefer to arrange a "winter vacation" for their cars. In this case, you should not take the battery home, but rather leave it on the car, having previously done a complete discharge.
