Batteries with liquid electrolyte need to be periodically replenished with water. The frequency of adding water will depend on how the battery is used and how it is used. Batteries emit large amounts of explosive gas when charging and must be handled with extreme caution.
Necessary
a key with a rubber grip to disconnect the battery
Instructions
Step 1
Disconnect and inspect the battery. The top surface and terminal connections must be dry. If there is liquid on the top surface, this will mean an excess of liquid filled into the battery.
Step 2
Check that all protective caps are securely attached to the battery. Clean debris from the top of the battery, terminals and connections with a cloth, salt solution, brush and water. Be careful not to get any cleaning solution inside the battery.
Step 3
Fully charge the battery before adding water. You can add water to a discharged (partially charged) battery only if the plates are visible. Then add water until you close the plates and charge the battery. Charge the battery in a well-ventilated area.
Step 4
Remove the battery cover (if present) and unscrew the protective caps. Turn the caps over so that no dirt gets on the inside of the caps.
Step 5
Add water to a level 3 mm below the vent hole. Screw back the protective caps
