The gearbox is one of the largest components in a car. It transmits rotation from the engine crankshaft to the drive wheels of the car, in addition, it converts the speed and torque so that the car can start and pick up speed. Like other components, the gearbox needs maintenance.
Necessary
- - rag;
- - keys set;
- - metal brush;
- - a key for the drain plug;
- - container for waste oil.
Instructions
Step 1
One of the most important service points is changing the transmission oil in the gearbox. This oil must have a certain set of characteristics that deteriorate during its operation. It should be noted right away: the process of draining the oil, depending on the type of car and gearbox, can vary greatly. Some types of gearboxes, for example, a number of modern automatic ones, are absolutely not designed for maintenance in a garage. Their maintenance should be carried out in special service centers.
Step 2
First of all, carefully read the operating instructions for the car. If the process of changing the transmission oil is available at home, it will certainly be described.
Step 3
It is most convenient to carry out the operation on an inspection pit or a lift. The oil will merge best with a heated gearbox, so do not let the car cool too much while driving or warm it up if the car is stationary. Drive the car into a hole, turn off the engine, set the parking brake.
Step 4
Drop into the observation ditch. Locate the drain plug on the transmission. The gearbox is attached directly to the engine. On rear-wheel drive vehicles, it is located in the middle of the bottom, closer to the rear axle. On front-wheel drive vehicles - to the left of the engine, as viewed from below, facing towards the front of the vehicle. Other location options are also possible. The drain plug is usually located on the bottom or side of the transmission.
Step 5
In case of heavy contamination, clean the drain plug with a wire brush or a special cleaning solution. Then wipe the plug attachment with a rag.
Step 6
Using a special wrench, carefully release the drain plug, but do not unscrew it completely. Take a prepared waste oil container and place it under the drain plug. Unscrew the cover all the way. Be careful, the oil may be hot. Let the oil drain completely.
Step 7
In some cases, the drain cover may not be found. Then, in order to drain the oil, it is necessary to unscrew the gearbox pan completely, placing a container under it to drain the oil.
