A normal variator belt on a scooter under normal operating conditions is designed for a service life of 6,000 km. Less on Chinese models. It is recommended to inspect the belt every 2000 km for signs of wear. If you find them, change it immediately.

It is necessary

  • - new belt;
  • - a set of keys and heads;
  • - hammer, screwdriver, pliers;
  • - assistant

Instructions

Step 1

Note the signs of belt wear and always pay attention to their presence when inspecting it. This is the exfoliation of the upper layer, the presence of cracks, both in the longitudinal and transverse directions. Operation of a belt with signs of wear threatens to break it with further breakdown of the variator itself.

Step 2

In addition, the minimum working width is indicated on the outside of the belt. As it wears down, the width decreases. By measuring the working width of the belt and comparing it with the minimum, you can accurately judge the need to replace it.

Step 3

Place the scooter on the center stand to remove the old belt. Remove the securing bolts from the right half of the clutch cover and then the left. Remove both halves. Remove the starter bendix with your hands. Unscrew the centrifugal clutch nut. Have a second person apply pressure to the rear of the scooter so that the shock is compressed as much as possible. At the same time, the assistant must apply the rear brake.

Step 4

After loosening the centrifugal clutch nut (use a hammer if necessary) remove the belt. To do this, spread the halves of the centrifugal clutch pulley by hand and push the belt to its base. Observe the direction of the belt when installing the new belt. It is shown by arrows. If there are no arrows, then the belt is non-directional and can work with any installation.

Step 5

On some scooter models, the belt replacement procedure is different. After removing the halves of the variator covers, unscrew the nut of its drive pulley. Pre-secure the stationary clutch cheek piece with a special puller or a suitable wrench.

Step 6

Remove the fixed cheek piece together with the variator belt. Then remove the inner half of the variator pulley assembly from the shaft. Remove the rollers from the variator housing and inspect them for wear. Inspect the running surfaces of the drive pulley for mechanical damage.

Step 7

Clean all parts from dirt and rubber dust and reinstall the pulley. Clean the casing of the variator from the wear debris of the belt and pulleys. Slide the new belt onto the driven pulley and sink it into the inner radius by sliding the pulley halves apart. Rotate the variator several times so that the belt is in the position corresponding to the minimum driving speed. Assemble the variator housing by screwing the left and right halves.
