Unlike the gear lever on a manual box, on cars with automatic transmission there is an RVD lever, which is deciphered as "a lever for selecting gear ranges." Mounted on the floor to the side of the driver or on the steering column, they have approximately the same set of positions for the lever. These positions are designated by the Latin letters "P", "R", "N", "D (D4)", "3 (D3)", "2", "1 (L)". On the lever itself there is a lock button for dangerous switching and a mode button "OD".

Step 1
Position "P" - parking. In this position of the lever, the output shaft of the box is blocked, and it is impossible to move the car. Selected for long-term parking. To avoid breakage of the automatic transmission, move the RVD to the "P" position only if the vehicle is completely stopped and motionless.
Step 2
Position "R" - reverse, reverse. Switch on only when the vehicle is stationary. Moving to the "R" position when moving the machine forward will lead to breakdown of the automatic transmission, transmission, and even the engine itself.
Step 3
Position "N" is neutral. In this position of the RVD, all elements of the automatic transmission are disabled, the machine moves freely. Use when towing your car for short distances, no more than 70 km.
Step 4
Position "D" or "D4" - driver. The main mode when the car is moving forward. Gears are automatically shifted from first to high and back, depending on the degree of pressing the gas pedal and the use of the brake pedal.
Step 5
Position "3" or "D3". Takes place in four- and five-speed automatic transmissions. In this position of the RVD, only 3 forward gears are used. Turn on when driving around the city with frequent braking, as well as on dirt roads with ups and downs.
Step 6
Position "2" - forward movement only in first and second gear. For driving on dirt, forest, swampy roads at a speed of 40 - 50 km / h. Thanks to the possibility of braking by the engine, the mode protects and preserves the brake pads.
Step 7
Position "1" or "L". The mode is recommended when driving off-road, on snow, on steep descents and ascents. Be sure to turn on this mode if your car gets stuck in a rut. In this case, operate the gas pedal using only 1/3 of the full stroke.
Step 8
On the handle of the RVD under the button for dangerous switching is the button "OD" - overdrive, overdrive. Use it when reaching a sufficiently high speed of 80 - 100 km / h, as well as in case of a sharp increase in the speed of movement, for example, when overtaking. Change up a gear, provided that the inscription “OD OFF” is not lit on the dashboard. If "OD OFF" is on, upshifting is prohibited.
