The crosspiece is the most important part in the propeller shaft system. Its main function is to transfer rotary motion from the box to other parts of the machine. The crosspiece is one of the weakest parts in the car; in case of breakdown, it requires immediate replacement.
Preparatory stage. Selection of funds
To change the crosspiece, you need the following:
- electric drill;
- grinder (grinder);
- cutter;
- vice;
- round file for fine work (file);
- punch (core);
- ruler or vernier caliper.
First stage. Dismantling
The first step is to remove the propeller shaft. To do this, you need to find the ends of the cross pressed into the propeller shaft and cut them off with a grinder. Next, you need to carefully knock out the cut ends inward. When inspecting the resulting bearing holes, you will notice that they are fixed in a manner similar to punching.
Flange preparation
For the next stage, you will need a drill and a cutter with a diameter of 3-5 mm. The flange, in which the piece of the cross has been preserved, must be placed in a vice and clamped. With the help of a cutter drill, the punch marks on the flange are neatly cut on one side. The bearing races are not taken into account in this case. The main thing is to make sure that the bore diameter is not damaged.
Measurement of a failed part
The remaining straight part of the cross is knocked out only from the back side; on the front side, a flap will interfere with it. Then the remaining clips are put on it. Using a ruler or vernier caliper, the most accurate measurement of the parameters of the part damaged during operation is made. It is better to purchase a replacement element in specialized stores.
Needle file and clip fit
It is necessary to get rid of the punching points on the flange and universal joint. To do this, use a round file. Next, you need to drown deep into the clip. This action is performed on opposite mounting holes. The insertion depth of the clips should be equal on both sides. The durability of the part will depend on this. Such an operation is performed especially accurately and slowly.
Magazine beveling and final assembly
At the final stage, the clips are carefully cut without excessive force. To do this, using a punch (core), two points are created in the holes of the universal joint and flange. In this case, it is required to strictly adhere to the parameters of the factory points. At the end of the work, the cardan shaft is installed in place and checked for functionality.

After self-repairing the propeller shaft, it is recommended to periodically check it for defects. Such an easy, but very useful prophylaxis will allow you to avoid unpleasant situations with this part at the most inappropriate moment of the trip.
