On the roads, there are cases when road signs and markings contradict each other. The question then arises: what conditions would be correct to obey?
It should be noted that most often road signs and markings simply duplicate each other. In this case, there is not even a question of what is in priority. The second common case on roads is the addition of road markings to a sign. In this case, there are no unnecessary questions either. But there is also a third option, when the road sign and the markings diverge. Drivers are sometimes confused by this. They cannot determine which is more important.
There are 4 types of elements on the roads:
- Permanent signs;
- Temporary signs;
- Permanent markup;
- Temporary markup.
It is very easy to distinguish both temporary signs and markings from permanent ones: temporary markings are made with yellow paint and the background on temporary signs is also yellow. Another feature of temporary signs is their location on a portable stand.
What is the priority?
In order to correctly determine the priority, it is worth referring to the rules of the road. In the 1st appendix to the traffic rules in the last paragraph of the 8th chapter it is said that if there is a discrepancy between temporary and permanent signs, then the traffic must be carried out observing the conditions of temporary signs.
The same can be said for markup. The rules indicate that the priority between permanent and temporary markings is always temporary. Also in Appendix 2 it is indicated that signs take precedence over any markup.
Prioritization
Based on the above, you can make the following list of priorities in descending order:
- Temporary road signs;
- Permanent road signs;
- Temporary road markings;
- Permanent road markings.
Examples of
For greater assimilation, it is worth considering the most common cases of discrepancy between the sign and the markup. In case of incorrectly set priorities by the driver, traffic police officers can establish a punishment either in the form of a fine or in the form of deprivation of rights.
Case 1: overtaking with a “no overtaking” sign (3.20) and intermittent lane markings (1.5)
This combination means only one thing: overtaking on a section of the road is prohibited, regardless of the markings. But discontinuous markings allow other maneuvers not prohibited by the sign. That is, on a section of the road where such markings and signs are installed, you can make a left turn, a U-turn, the driver can also take a detour in the oncoming lane, but overtaking is prohibited.
Case 2: overtaking with a sign "End of no overtaking zone" (3.21) and a solid marking line (1.1)
Considering case 1, it seems that in this case, despite the markings, overtaking is prohibited. But if the driver makes such a maneuver, then the traffic police will immediately fine. And the traffic police will be right because this sign only marks the end of the zone where overtaking is prohibited. This sign does not permit anything. A solid line indicates that overtaking is prohibited.
