Violation of the toe-in of the front wheels of the car is manifested in the form of increased wear of the tread, difficult turning of the steering wheel, the appearance of a whistling sound from under the wheels when turning the car to the right or left. In addition, the car loses its stability on the roadway and becomes more difficult to control, which requires the driver to be more focused.

Necessary

  • - a special ruler,
  • - 13 mm spanner,
  • - "bean" key No. 1.

Instructions

Step 1

Checking the angle of convergence of the front wheels is currently carried out on special stands, but not so long ago, a similar check was carried out independently on the inspection pit.

Step 2

A check was carried out using a special ruler, which measured the distance between the front and rear edges of the wheel rim, at the points of their maximum convergence and divergence, which are located horizontally, at a level slightly above the fastening of the steering rods, approximately in the middle of the wheel.

Step 3

In those cases when a special ruler was not at hand, they did it themselves, fixing a caliper on a wooden rail of a suitable size.

Step 4

If in the course of checking the toe angle of the front wheels there are discrepancies from the standard, then it is necessary to release the tightening of the locknuts of the steering tips and, rotating the steering rods, as a rule, with an adjustable plumbing wrench ("Bobble"), achieve the required distance.

Step 5

As an example, consider the adjustment of the toe-in of the front wheels of a VAZ car of the "classic ruler", at which the distance between the front and rear edges of the wheel rim is 2 mm. But when measuring, it turned out that the indicated distance is 4 mm.

Step 6

Then, having released the steering tips in the manner indicated above, we first rotate the left steering rod counterclockwise until we reduce the toe-in to 3 mm, and then rotate the right steering rod, reaching the standard wheel toe-in equal to 2 mm.

Step 7

On trucks, this adjustment is even easier. Because their steering is equipped with just one tie rod with left and right threaded ends. By releasing the tips, and rotating the rod, the toe-in of both front wheels is simultaneously adjusted.
